House parties would be the other choice. I think it all depends what you do at that house party to make it interesting. Myself, its a room full of friends who have their significant others with them. I am flying solo as my better half is down south. Really...what can you do. "Always look on the bright side of life"...Right now I am still undecided on what I am going to do. Another thing that comes along with New Year's are resolutions. Who actually makes it through the whole year keeping up with what they promised to themself. You hear people saying lose weight or stop smoking..yadi yadi yada. I think if people want to...they will. By saying on January 1st i'm gonna do this, you're not, what you are really saying is I'm gonna try, but really i won't succeed.
Really the best way of doing something is to not do it yourself, but to have someone and give you that push, that motivation.
